Can the auto complete / name lookup feature be disabled through a policy or manually?

We just had a problem sending sensitive data to the wrong recipient. Names that a user used to type are now evaluating to foreign internet addresses and that's causing problems. We can not delete those contacts anywhere. Wonder if there's a way to get rid of this functionality, or (better) to limit it to work with only people in the Company Directory or in the local directory.

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.
